...My Life as 'Drive away' driver

1 - Used 'Cube' van 20180111 - NC-FL Call dispatch right away this AM for a run but someone got in ahead of me. We thought instead of sitting around half the day that we could do a short run in the AM before we picked up the van at noon. Didn't work so we sat in the motel until noon. At times we had the next two weeks planned based on what was on the board at that moment. Then one piece was gone and we'd have to start over. There had been a run from FL to MI, and then MI to CA. Gone. This morning at breakfast I noticed that some of the yogurt was outdated. Right away they replaced and came over and thanked me for bringing it to their attention. Not the same as other locations. We are supposed to be out of the room by 11 but they let us stay until noon. Got to the pickup location shortly after noon. Van is ready, it is a cube van going to CubeSmart location. Other than being a little dirty it's a clean running truck. Our original car rental was to return the car to Winston-Salem, but instead we paid $5 extra and returned it to Greensboro about two miles from the pickup location. While BB was returning the car I went to fill up, Shell had all the pumps covered so I had to go back across the freeway to Speedy. On my way to the airport the drop company called me back, must have been a regional person as they didn't know which location I was talking about. But, Saturday is OK. Any time, any day that they are open. So that works out and gives us options. Once I picked up BB it was after 1 local and time to eat. Caroline's Diner. Great food. I had potato soup, I could just eat the soup. But I also had meatloaf, good stuff. I'm guessing the sweets are good too, but I'm always to full to try them. On the road, almost three hours without a stop. Back roads. Two lanes for a ways but lots of truck traffic. Main route. Just seems to be a lot more buildings in dis-repair in the south and west. Maybe the weather takes them down faster in the midwest. Tonight we are at the Sleep Inn. Another one that is upgrading. About half their rooms are blocked off. Only drove three hours today, 10 tomorrow and another couple on Saturday. Saturday will be because of the price of motels closer to the drop. Plan is to get a car and drive back up to Port St Luice. There is a truck there IF we can get it before someone else does. IF we get it and can pick it up Saturday we will. Or we will wait until Monday to pick it up. Don't have a plan as to how far north we will go if we don't have work. Still nothing out of the Southeast that we want. Just looked at the weather and it should be in the mid-70's tomorrow and Friday BUT next week there will be highs in the 30's and 40's this far south. We may not be ready head back north just yet. :) Did notice that in Greensboro, NC that our pool at the motel was frozen, a pond near another motel was frozen, thick ice. Finally got my email account back so I could be in contact with people. Didn't miss much but it is a helpless feeling when you can't do it. |
